Australia

While Australia may be far removed geographically from the rest of the world,
this vast country is at the forefront of a new, technologically driven wine
renaissance.

Australia has the potential for more vineyard acreage than any country in the
world.  This real estate glut means that even prime growing areas are
inexpensive compared to other leading wine countries.  Combine cheap land
with impressive technology and big dreams and Australia has become the
quality/value leader in a number of wine categories.

Australia's most recognizable wine is Shiraz which is the same grape as
Syrah.  Aussie Shiraz is produced in a variety of styles, but the most prevalant
is a big, fruit-forward wine that is both easy drinking from release date and
has the potential to improve with age.

Australia also produces very good Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and
Semillon, again usually at good prices.  Many Aussie winemakers produce
blended wines such as Shiraz/Cabernet or Chardonnay/Semillon.  The
predominant grape is listed first on the labels of such blends.

More than 1,000 wineries operate in Australia with more starting monthly.  A
few major players dominate the export market.  Lindeman's, Rosemount,
Penfold's, Lehmann, Greg Norman, Yalumba and Yellow Tail are among the
most recognizable Aussie wines in the United States.
