Austria

Austria is relatively unknown as a wine producer outside of wine geeks and
Eastern Europeans.  And for most of its history, Austrian wines didn't deserve
much consideration.  But the past two decades have seen local producers
increase quality as well as exports.

The primary Austrian grape exported to the U.S. is Gruner Veltliner.  While
difficult to pronounce, this wine offers interesting spice flavors, a full body and
crisp taste that is a terrific match with many foods.  While some may find
flavors of green bean or green pepper to be off-putting, the more adventurous
drinker will likely find a reasonably priced wine that stands up to a wide range
of cuisines.
