Italy

Italy offers such variety and quantity of wine that generalizations are worthless.
While not a particularly big country in size, Italy often produces more wine
annually than any other country.  Wine is produced in nearly every part of this
country from dozens of obscure native grapes as well as common
international varietals.

Sangiovese wines from the Chianti region of Tuscany are ubiquitous
worldwide.  Piedmont's Barolos and Barbarescos are truly world-class and a
new class of Super-Tuscan wines that blend Sangiovese with Cabernet have
taken the collecting market by storm.  Other Italian wines such as Pinot Grigio,
Barbera and Valpolicella range from poor to very good depending on the
weather, winemaker and region.
