Peju Province
I believe that sometimes serendipity is a
better guide than careful planning.  It
certainly proved to be the case when we
stumbled upon Peju Province on one of
first trips to Napa way back in 1990.

Stumbling was the reality of that day, as we
had spent nearly seven hours sampling
wine throughout the valley and found
ourselves at 5:00 p.m. when most wineries
shut their tasting rooms. Quickly rifling
through a wine country tour guide, I found
one winery that stayed open to 6:00 p.m.
Hence the discovery of Peju Province.

It turns out that we weren't the only ones
looking for one last taste.  This was before
the winery's gorgeous expansion and the
small tasting room was quite crowded.  But
Anthony  Peju was cordial and informative
and we left with a mixed case of wine.
Peju has grown from only 30 acres when the winery was founded in 1983 to nearly 400
today.  Despite the increased production, most of Peju's wine is still sold directly to
consumers at the tasting room or through direct sales.  Whether it's the inexpensive and
quaffable Colombard-based Carnival, which my wife always just calls "our picnic wine," or
the high-priced reserve Cabernets, Peju has always found a ready market for his wines.
Peju's Cabernet's are dark, complex and
age-worthy.  The Carnival is a slightly sweet rosé
made from  French Colombard grapes

Peju also makes a Cabernet
Franc that is the match of any
from California.  It's intense with
cedary aromas, sweet berry
flavors and the leafy
characteristics that are common
in this varietal.

Located in Rutherford on the
main road through the Napa
Valley, Peju's winery is beautiful
with interesting architecture
complemented by lovely
fountains and gardens.
Nowadays, many other wineries
have extended their hours until
6:00 p.m.  But whether it's your
first or last stop, a visit to Peju is
worth the trip.
