Portugal

Portugal's position in the world of wine is primarily based on it's namesake
fortified wine, Port.  This recognition is well deserved, based on the long and
successful history of Portugal's Port houses.

Port takes its name from Oporto, the seaside city which sits where the Douro
River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.  Red wine made primarily from Touriga
Nacional and Tempranillo grapes are blended with brandy, resulting in full
bodied, sweeter wines with an alcohol content of approximately 20 percent.

Portuguese winemakers are increasingly emphasizing unfortified wines from
both red and white grapes.  While the results are varied, you can expect to see
an increasing number of Portuguese wines in American restaurants and retail
shops.
