Weingut Prinz Von Hessen
2001 Winkeler Hasensprung Riesling Spatlese

German wines can be be confusing because of the
long, technical names as well as unfamiliarity with the
regions and styles.  But if you can get past that
confusion, you can often find great wines at good
prices.

This 2001 Riesling is a perfect example.  This is a
full-bodied Riesling with peach and citrus flavors.  It is
slightly sweet, but has nice acidity and is well
balanced.

We enjoyed it with Thanksgiving dinner and it was a
big hit.   I immediately bought another six bottles and
plan to cellar them for 3-5 years.  This will defintely get
even better over the next few years.  I bought it for $14
in Chicago.

This winemaker makes a variety of Rieslings from
Germany's Rheingau region.  If you prefer your wines
bone dry, give the Kabinett Riesling a try.  Von
Hessen's Auslese is the pick if you want a sweeter
wine.
