| Wine Information on the Worldwide Web One of the great things about wine – other than drinking it – is that there’s an endless array of information on grapes, wine regions, specific wines, etc. And learning about wine makes drinking it even more enjoyable. Educating ourselves about wine and its proper use can only help us to enjoy it to the fullest, and to make it part of a gracious way of life. On this site you will find how wine is made, how to enjoy wine, wine regions, wine and health, wine and the Bible, Storing wine, wine resources and links and a wine calendar of events. www.wineanswers.com is provided by Wine Market Council, a non-profit organization representing the U.S. wine trade. It provides quick, helpful information on wine topics including wine varieties, regions and food affinities. www.wine-lovers-page.com is a collection of educational information, tasting notes, vintage charts wine term definitions and discussion groups. www.westcoastwine.net is a community of wine enthusiasts with an emphasis on chats, threaded discussions and one-on-one wine advice. www.wino.net is mostly a collection of links to other websites, but it does have a large number of articles on wine and health topics and laws related to wine. Wine and Food Sites www.beefitswhatsfordinner.com offers recipes and nutrition information about beef. And is there anything better than a great glass of Cabernet with a big, juicy steak? Well maybe a Chateneuf du Pape with herb-crusted prime rib. You get the picture. www.ilovecheese.com is a great site to learn about all aspects of cheese and even buy your favorite fromages. With descriptions, recipes and pairing information, it's an awesome resource for those of you who didn't go to school in Wisconsin. The site is produced by Dairy Management, Inc. a milk industry group. www.rustickitchen.com is a Chicago area cooking school emphasizing stylish casual entertaining. Janine MacLachlan creates classes and events that combine food education with enjoyment. The site also includes great recipes using the best seasonal ingredients. Magazine Sites www.decanter.com is the online version of The Decanter, the U.K.’s leading wine magazine. It includes wine basics, reviews, news, tasting notes and food features with a decidedly European perspective. www.foodandwine.com is the online version of the print magazine. It tends to focus more on food than wine, but it does offer interesting recipes and well- paired wine selections. www.winespectator.com is the online version of The Wine Spectator, a leading consumer focused wine magazine. The free access section includes tasting notes for thousands of wines plus a selection of articles from the print magazine. They also have a fun "what am I drinking" puzzle. Regional Information Sites www.frenchwinesfood.com is a site maintained by the French government to promote what else: French wine and food. It provides a good primer on French wine history, regions, laws and styles. www.germanwineusa.org is a site maintained by the German wine industry to promote their wines. This site helps in deciphering the often confusing terms you see on German labels. There’s also a pretty helpful tool for pairing wines with food, once you get past its confusing interface. www.nzwine.com is a very good site complete with winery profiles, maps, regional information and history. Maintained by New Zealand’s wine trade group. www.oregonwine.org promotes the winemaking in Oregon state with winery profiles, maps, events and statistics. www.washingtonwine.org promotes the wine industry in Washington state. It includes good trip planner as well as winery information and production statistics. www.wineaustralia.com is a portal to consumer and trade information on Australian wines including specific wineries and regions. www.winecountry.com is actually a collection of web sites focused on travel and tourism in California’s wine producing regions. Find a restaurant, book lodging or plan an entire trip using these tools. Wine Research and Statistics Sites www.wineinstitute.org is a trade association and policy group funded by California’s wine industry. While they have their own agenda, this site is a good source for industry statistics and historical information regarding the California wine industry. www.fas.usda.gov/htp/horticulture/wine.html provides worldwide grape production from the United States Department of Agriculture. Wine Events www.localwineevents.com is a listing of various wine tastings and events that is searchable by city. |
